I wanted to share this gorgeous orchid I stashed in a used half-bottle of Jurancon, a wonderful sweet white wine from southwestern France. The wine is made from several little-known grapes: Gros Manseng, Petit Manseng, and Courbu, and it’s tough to find but so worth the search.
Similar to France’s more famous dessert wines from the region of Sauternes, Jurancon offers wonderfully lifted aromas of dried fruits alongside compelling floral, exotic citrus and honey notes.
To achieve this effect, take any empty bottle of wine (but preferably one you’ve really enjoyed, or has a particularly pretty label) and buy an orchid branch or two from your florist. Add some water and stick in the stem, and you’re in business.
