Locally Owned and Organic Hotspots

They’re everywhere—organic and locally operated food stores. What’s your favorite?

Mine is Paul’s Fruit Market in Louisville, Kentucky (my hometown). As a boy, my mom would give me a dollar—“Don’t spend it all at one time,” she said. I ignored that advice (as I did with everything she told me) and bought a huge organic pear. It was monstrous. Needless to say it was the best pear I’ve ever tasted. The juices poured into my mouth and slopped all over my face and down my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles shirt, making me sticky for the next four hours. I was in heaven.

I was thrilled to find an inexpensive, locally owned produce market in my Oakland neighborhood. Farmer Joe's, on 35th and McArthur, has a wonderful selection of organic fruits and veggies, a great selection of cheeses and fresh breads, and bulk goods. It is small, but has everything I need!

My favorite place for organic and local food hands down, is the farmer’s market in San Francisco at the Ferry Building: www.ferrybuildingmarketplace.com. It has delicious produce, gourmet food stands, and great people. I went to a wonderful organic and local food cafe yesterday off of Chesnut street in the Marina district of San Francisco, called lettus: www.lettusorganic.com. The peanut butter cookies are to die for, and the asian chicken salad is full of savory goodness.
It feels good to write.
