Q: Thank you for this interview, Sheri. Can we begin by having you tell us why you chose an inspirational book to write?
A: My favorite books to read are inspirational books. I like to have a purpose in everything I do. When I read, I want to be changed in some way at the end of a book. I did try writing a fiction novel several times and my heart just was not in it. Then, I realized that I have probably read hundreds of leadership and motivational books and my work as a life coach involved inspiring people, so it was a natural decision to write an inspirational book. I have been encouraged over the years by several key people in my life to write an inspirational book, as well. I have experienced triumph over tragedy and have learned some great skills and techniques in the process of recovery that I wanted to share with others.
Q: Did you outline before you wrote your book or just went with the flow?
A: I am a working in the flow kind of person. I only write when I am inspired and I get completely absorbed in my work. Time seems to stand still. I feel very passionate about it. I did create chapter headings before I actually started writing, so I had some kind of organization in my mind regarding the direction of the project. I cultivate the flow process through prayer and meditation. I work on focusing my thoughts and then words just flow. I wrote my book in five and half weeks. I encourage my life coaching clients to strive to tap into this flow process because it is highly productive and fulfilling.
Q: What kind of research did you do before putting this book together?
A: The main type of research that I conducted was a lifetime interest in personal leadership, spirituality, and motivation. In my life coaching practice, I work on a daily basis helping people move towards their ideal lives. Some of the keys in the book are effective life coaching techniques that I use with clients.
In addition, I knew that I wanted to use some inspirational quotes and scriptures, so I devoted time to researching these. At some point in my life, I will probably write a leadership textbook where I use seminal research and current research in the field. This book, Keys to Living Joyfully, is different. It is my personal approach to great personal leadership. It contains steps to living a life with more joy. These steps work for me and are effective for my clients.
