Q. Thank you for this interview, Gale. Can we begin by having you tell us why you chose mystery thriller as your genre?
A. I love mystery books, and I love the thriller genre. Mystery challenges the mind. The thriller genre is fast paced with a lot of action. I suppose my mind thinks in that way. The easiest thing I have ever done was writing my mystery, thriller, suspense and romance book. The story I had to tell just happened to be a multiple genre story – much like life.
Q. Did you outline before you wrote your book or did you just go with the flow?
A. No. I just write. A story pops into my head. I believe it comes from a divine presence. I did write out a Table of Contents. I sat down and typed until my story was entirely told.
Q. Who was your favorite character in Evolution of a Sad Woman and why?
A. My favorite character in Evolution of a Sad Woman was Kizzy. Kizzy is a complicated woman. She is passionate, mysterious, explosive, emotional, gentle, mischievous, independent, flirty and needy. She is different with each of the five men. And yet, she is the same. No one truly understands her, but everyone loves her.
Q. Who was your least favorite character?
A. This one is hard. I actually loved all my characters, even the killer. All my characters are complex. I like my characters to be as realistic as I can make them.
Q. Can you tell us about the setting and why you chose it?
A. I am from the Houston area. I felt very comfortable writing in this location. Previously, I lived in the Houston city limits for about six years. Like Kizzy, Houston is a city of complication. It has all kinds of people - good and bad – rich and poor. It is expansive and grand. It is a place where Kizzy could lose herself.
Q. What was the hardest part to write?
A. The writing of my novel was the easiest thing I have ever done.
The hardest part came when I went in to do an edit. I edit my own work before I send it to the editor. I check the details of the story, the typographical errors, spelling and grammar. I am a detail-oriented person. I actually left one detail wrong on purpose. (Laughs) No one has ever caught it. I find that delicious!
Q. What was the inspiration behind the story? Where were you when you came up with the idea?
A. The inspiration was the story in my head. One day after I had decided to be an author, the story just popped into my head. It was not there – and the next minute it was. I believe the characters and the story were put in my head by a divine presence. It was not part of a story. It was an entire story. I was meant to write my mystery, suspense, thriller and romance novel.
