My friends Pat, her husband Harry, and I have been friends for more than fifty years. We attended the same high school in Atlanta, Georgia. It is difficult to stay really close since we live so far apart, but we continue to keep in touch by email, the telephone, and high school reunions. I first met her dogs when I attended a reunion and stayed with Pat and Harry about five years ago and saw them again this past spring. They are precious pups and I know how much they are loved by both Pat and Harry.
A couple of week ago I received the following letter via email from Pat and wanted to share it with others because it is so beautifully written and shows how love has no boundaries.
I hope you enjoy the story as much as I did.
My Friend Pooh
To anyone who has ever bonded with an animal. It doesn’t even have to be a dog or cat. I truly believe that an animal can and does fill such a void in a person’s life. I personally have always loved dogs and became attached very quickly with only a few and POOH was my main man.
POOH was bought from a breeder in Gainesville, Georgia and was supposed to be Peek a Pooh, and he wasn’t suppose to weigh over six pounds. Well what a surprise we had—he not only wasn’t a Peek a Pooh, he was a Cock a Poo and he ended up weighing twenty-four pounds not six pounds. But besides the surprises he was a blond fuzzy ball of energy. My husband and I married after our children were grown, so POOH was our child so to speak.
They say that dogs take on the personality of their owners, well, since my husband is very laid back, I guess I am to blame for his temperament. POOH and I were inseparable. You know how it is said that babies will die if not handled, well; I truly believe it is the same with pets and older humans as well. Studies have shown that the love of an animal can help cure sick people. Well I know I sound like I am babbling but my point is—POOH was always there for me no matter what mood I was in. Just his touch always comforted me. He would jump up beside me and lay as close as he could. He always seemed to know when I needed that extra time with him. It sounds like he was pretty docile but believe me he usually wasn’t so quiet or still.
