Tanya lives on the first floor. Like the rest of us, she has trouble with her windows. Her window is on the same side of the stoop as Al’s favorite perch. “Tanya, is that a sock in your window?” he asked with his usual dose of sarcasm earlier that summer. Of course, it was. The window didn’t close evenly over her air conditioner, so she stuffed the gap with a big sock. Al spent the rest of that afternoon sealing Tanya’s window and repositioning the air conditioner so she could have her sock back. I looked at this sack of women’s clothes and wondered if Tanya picked out all the good items, if there even were any. I succumbed to a Gap rain coat and a faux leopard fur jacket. They’re still hanging in my closet, unworn.
