My colleague Lisa told me many of her eleven-year-old daughter’s friends have iPhones. If you’ve ever observed these children of the 90s, you know that they are plugged in 24/7 and can set a Qwerty keyboard ablaze with their furious fingers. I wonder if they are yet using their iPhones to speak with their friends while in the same room.

So, it seems the digital age is here to stay. But with so many social networks, social media, and instant interpersonal communication, why do I feel so alone?

I couldn't agree with you more when you say, "Without college dorms, frats, classes, parties, and lots of free time to grease the wheels of our social lives, we are left feeling a little impotent and dejected in comparison to our social golden era: the teen years"... I think about that every day. I was thinking about starting a website to make friends instead of just for dating. I recently moved from NYC to LA and feel the same loss of social connection. Friends are what help make you who you are. Lovers don't even have some of the qualities that friends bring... always something to think about!
