Imagine all the things my grandma has seen and lived through. Things like the sinking of the Titanic; the death of Teddy Roosevelt; World War I and the roaring 20’s; Al Capone and prohibition; the Great Depression; The Holocaust, Hitler, World War II, Pearl Harbor, and the bombing of Hiroshima; airplanes, submarines, automobiles (from Model T’s to McLaren’s) and motorcycles; radios, television, telephones; modern technology; the decline of the American families; Polio Vaccines and Immunizations; Korean War, Vietnam War, and all the wars since; Neil Armstrong walking on the moon; space shuttles, satellites; cell phones and lap tops and digital clocks; rock and roll and motion pictures; indoor plumbing; Einstein’s theory of general relativity; X-Rays, CAT scans, MRI’s, and ultrasounds; Walt Disney; the typewriter; and their clothing was mostly all made by the wife or mother for all family members; from President Taft to George Bush, Jr. and in between she had the pleasure of living through Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy; the Hippie era (far-out, funky, neato, and groovy) and the baby boomers; etc. etc.
A lot has happened in this world since 1907. My grandma wasn’t much of a conformist. She has never worn make up or lipstick of any kind. She was never worried about wearing fancy clothes. As a matter of fact, getting her to wear clothes that matched was a daily chore. She always had long hair and braided it different ways until she was in her 90’s and my mom grew tired of having to deal with that. She was never judgmental of people. I believe she would still prefer to milk a cow as opposed to buying milk. Grow her own vegetables as opposed to going to the store and buying them. She could live without meat, as much of her life was spent being somewhat of a vegetarian—although not completely. When she was 94, she had a doctor’s appointment and they did some blood work and you know what the doctor discovered? She has the blood of a 23-25 year old woman. Her blood was that good. I probably couldn’t even come close to that. I think that was awesome.
