It’s a Sunday morning; the day of our family reunion, and everyone is rushing around getting ready for the trip to the picnic grounds over in another town. We’ve been making this trip for years now. Dad left early last evening to go over and set up the tables, chairs, tents, etc. He uses this as an excuse to spend the night with a favorite uncle of his. They stay up most of the night chatting about their days of hunting and fishing. Each of them tries to outdo the other’s fish tales and bear stories. He loves this because it gives him some special time with his family. Mother and I spend the night with Grandpa and Grandma to help them get everything ready for our big day.
“Don’t forget the banana pudding we made last night and be sure to put it on ice. Bill, you go get the lawn chairs, the tablecloths, and fill the ice chest full. Be sure to take plenty because we’ll need it. Mary, the cake you baked last night is in the kitchen cupboard and the bean salad in the refrigerator.” Grandma yells.
Mother echoes, “Millie, come here quick and let me fix your hair up because it’s going to be hot outside today.”
“Mother is your hair dry; I’ll comb yours after I finish with Millie’s. We must hurry or we’re going to be late. I haven’t had time to get dressed as yet.”
Everyone tries to look their best in hopes they don’t appear any older than they did last year. We’re a family of loving relatives and we look forward to the all day affair to be together. Relatives come from all around the United States. We gather to sing, play games, exchange pictures, take pictures, and mainly to catch up on everyone’s lives for the past year.
Grandma is rushing around, and yells, “Hurry everyone I want to get to the grounds before your Great Grandmother because she’ll get rushed and exhausted before the day begins. We all know her health has not been too good and she’s not as spry as she once was.”
