What Names Turn You Off?

By: Brie Cadman (View Profile)

Some names seem inherently less attractive than others. A few names that I can’t seem to stomach are Ralph, Bertha, and Hyman. Of course, these superficialities mean little in light of a face-to-face introduction; physical attractiveness doesn’t change based on a subjectively unattractive name. But what about online or blind dating, where you may have little to go on except for a verbal description? Are there any names that you’d have a hard time dating?

Humpers and Krispy...yes, these are real names...I saw the licenses for both. Imagine introducing your parents to your college boyfriend Humpers. I think my dad had some sort of mini-stroke.

Ok, yeah I'm taking this to another level. I'm African American, and in my 'hood there's a trend of giving children (particularly girls) African names. I don't have a prob with that except that most the names given (Shaniqua, Rashonda, Shanaynay, etc.) AREN'T AFRICAN! My African friends (who are actually from Africa) have NO IDEA what these names mean. If you're going to name your children "whateva" that's your biz...(Moon Zappa, Apple, etc.)...just don't pretend you're paying tribute to the mother land. Besides, African names are actual phrases, which tells you about the person upon introduction. For instance, my girlfriend's (Americanized) name consists only of 5 letters, but in her native country, her name, which is much longer means: "I was born in the morning as the sun rose," so then people who meet her already know a bit about her. Just an FYI.

I've never liked the name Harry. Probably because of how my roommate in college always talked about her boyfriend of that name and always drew it out like, "hay-ree". Just grated on my nerves. The Potter books have helped dispel this distate somewhat, but not entirely.

For some reason, Harlan and Buford were two I can think of that made me uncomfortable. Being older now, the person matters more than their name can vex me. I address some people by their last name...or some variation thereof...and if we are really "ok" with one another, I have a nickname for you.

I always hated my name when I was in school no one could ever pronounce it correctly . As I got older I began to appreciate the difference . I have never met another teleda and my name means great warrior and i feel that I am a strong person so I guess there is something in a name.

DH is named Norman and I never would have picked that! His brother is Armand which is not very pleasant sounding either. I also dislike Oscar and any name beginning with Duh, like Dwayne. I have had kids in my daycare that were named Wolverine, Hercules, and Excalibur...I think Dad was trying to make them sound tough but to me it was STUPID.

My grandfather was Hezekiah on my fathers side. I was named after my grandfather on my mothers side. But I wouldn't have minded. Hezekiah sounds cool.

I met a guy once named Bo Bo. Apparently it was just a nickname, but who would want to be called that? Chemelle is kind of odd, sounds like kind of like Michelle. My great grandma was named Decima. I loved her but her name was just terrible. I once knew a girl in middle school named Eugina.

I have a name which is not common which I like. I've run across kids who were teased unmercifully growing up because they had names like Poppy Cox, Terry Terry, or Rose Bush. I've also know people who had such unusual names no one could spell or pronounce them. A friend growing up had a neighbor named Richard Head, the poor guy's nickname was Dick. You can only imagine how that sounded. I was always told not to name a child after someone famous at the time. There will be tons of Justin's, Brad's & Britney's, among other names 20 years from now. I'm with MsEllenT. Don't make up a name with a combination of other names. I knew a family who combined the grandparents names. They were seriously thinking of naming their one daughter after the grandma's Maude & Josephine, making it Maudiphine. Fortunately, an aunt talked them out of it. They had already done that to one of their kids. No one but members of the family would understand it.
