Invited to the Party, Revised

By: Barbara Stanley (View Profile)

Invited to the party, she could not conceal her joy.

She knew, from others talking, she would see that certain boy.

Oh, but he was handsome, with dimples when he smiled.

He looked at her so sweetly; she knew he was beguiled.

As often he would flirt with her, she hoped he would propose

that the two of them would couple and no one would oppose;

their arms wrapped round each other as they stood where all could see.

Lack of wealth has no bearing where love is always free.

It’s true she wasn’t in their “class”; she owned no fancy clothes.

Her shoes were always tight and her stockings all had holes.

Still, she was going to the party, just like all the rest.

She would shop the Dollar Store to look her very best.

The party-goers’ laughter could not have been as cruel

as that certain boy’s rejection, offered up as fuel

to feed the entertainment so to keep the party fun.

Oh, how she wanted to hide, but where was she to run?

The brother of the hostess, long now, out of school,

stepped up and took her hand. She would not look the fool.

He whispered softly in her ear, then kissed her on her lips

His arms wrapped round her waist, drawing them hip to hip.

They had such fun together, ignoring all the others.

All of them were asking how Barbie knew the brother.

The certain boy was angry, having listened to the host.

He realized not Barbie, but he who hurt the most.
