I wish we were burying the term “gay” instead of Heath. We would be so much better off on both accounts. But our infatuation with this term seems so much greater than our love of humanity that we embrace euphemistic misunderstanding with such matter of fact certainty as if it were the truth of the ages. The term is well on its way to becoming an institution after some thirty years of popularity. What a tragedy.
A tragedy, that is played out in people’s lives; real lives that are so warped and twisted because one doesn’t feel free simply to be. Brokeback made clear the perception of Ennis Del Mar that such a life between two men would leave him tortured at the end of a rope hung by his genitals. The reality of this perception and its consequences I know only too well. So to Heath I say bravo! Your light burned brightly and it was not in vain. I am comforted as are countless others that you were here. Bravo and thank you for such heart rendering honest artistry.
