The HBO series, Tell Me You Love Me, uses explicit (but not real) sex scenes to make the show “moving, emotional, and intimate.” Several recent films have used real sex to drive home the same points. I don’t mind seeing these close-to-real and real sex scenes, because I think it shows that sex isn’t always hot and lustful; sometimes it’s just downright awkward and ugly. What do you think? Should television and movies use the real thing, or leave it to our imaginations?

I'm ok with real people having sex, really I am, just not on my tv set! I want to have to live up to unrealistic escapist imaginary sex with soft lighting and haunting music. I'm so over reality shows.

Sexual imagery has been used tastefully in Europe for so long that it just seems to work. Then you have America, who's like the youngest stepchild constantly seeking attention. Most of the time on TV in America, it just doesn't work for me. But then there are certain films, scenes, great acting that can make a girl hot in her panties. There is really something to be said for imagination, what do you think single men and women do when they're not in relationships?

As I say about most things: it depends. It depends on the content, the story, the characters, what the film is trying to say and how, etc., etc. You can't make rules about these things. And it shouldn't be used as a gimmick to get higher ratings, nor should it be avoided because studios are afraid of the Puritanical anger of the audience...or whatever.

The sex scene from Monster' Ball immediately jumps into my mind, a scene that made me both uncomfortable and a little hot. I'm for it, only with major caveats: I'd like to see Vince Vaughn and Brad Pitt having real sex; I would not like to see Oprah or Fred Thompson having sex or wearing anything other than a full body turtleneck. Also, like Patti, I think there should be some sort of pre-movie warning "are you sitting next to an older relative or small child? Please see vendor to exchange ticket for another movie; this movies shows real life humping."

So you mean the actors (or their body doubles) actually have sex??? And it's not a skin flick??? Ewwwww.... I'm in the leave-it-to-our-imagination camp. I go to a lot of movies with my mom - well I used to until the Diva made her appearance - and I would be mortified if there were some awkward, endless "real life" sex scene. In fact, I think most sex scenes are gratuitous. Give me a love scene over a sex scene any day.
