View ProfileSince I couldn’t make it to the celebration of the tenth anniversary of The Vagina Monologues in New Orleans, one of my South Asian girlfriends offered up a second option to join her at the fifth anniversary of Yoni ki Baat, the South Asian version of The Vagina Monologues.
What started as an idea from a South Asian woman during the first-ever performance of The Vagina Monologues in Banglore, India turned into this South Asian project blessed by Eve, which included feedback from her on their script.
Yoni ki Baat is Sanskrit for, “Talks about the vagina,” and this performance—on the back deck of a bar on a warm evening in San Francisco—took me on the same emotional ride that I experienced watching my first Vagina Monologues with Eve Ensler ten years ago.
The opening invocation was the perfect appetizer to warm up the mostly South Asian, female-only crowd. Performed by Rasika Mathur, comedian and co-star of MTV’s Wild ‘N Out, the video below pokes fun at her culture’s ancient text on love, explaining that sometimes it takes a man, two women, and a vagina (and a supporting child) to make “congress.
