Although our friendship is not the most traditional, the bond between G and me is closer than the one I share with my own brothers. I guess I’m not the first person in history to face the challenge of watching my best friend move on right before my eyes, while at the same time questioning my own reality.
We finally sold the house we shared. It’s funny now to hear people commenting on how they “cannot imagine doing what we did.” Quite frankly, we did what came naturally and it all worked out. The strong bonds of our friendship were apparent to everyone during this process. K was the listing agent for our house and he sold me the house I’m moving into—which he owns.
Sure, our relationship won’t work for everyone, but my advice is this: once someone has touched your heart, they likely will always have some sort of spot tucked neatly away, way back in the back of your mind. Just because a relationship doesn’t work out in one aspect, don’t be afraid to try to shift your thinking. I’m sure many brilliant friendships have started out under stranger circumstances. G has challenged me in every aspect of my life and I am a better person for not walking away from the next stage in life just because one failed to work out. Besides, life is easier to navigate looking ahead instead of looking back.
