Learning to Say No Without Guilt

By: Melissa Grant (View Profile)

Where does this sense of entitlement come from, when family members think that you are their financial supplier? What can you do about it? Keep reading. I recently watched Oprah with a segment on developing financial maturity with Suze Orman. One family member was draining two other family members dry financially as well as emotionally because she would not manage her money in a responsible way. Note, they were allowing her to drain them emotionally and financially. The two other family members thought that they could save or help her but finally realized she was beyond their help, thus coming to the Oprah Show. I would say that it could have been quite embarrassing airing family business that way, but what is the alternative when you are the one giving all the time trying to save someone who does not want to be saved and has no respect for you or themselves. What do you do? You seek and get help.

If you are mentally strapped by a family member who constantly comes to you for money with no intentions of paying you back, it is time to get help with your dilemma. How do you know if you need help?

  • If you feel they only come to you when they need something.
  • If the person never pays you back.
  • If they do not have a job and you do.
  • If they start their conversation with saying I have a problem …
  • If you only hear from them when they need financial support.
  • If they begrudge the things that you have by making comments like, I could sure use a purse like that, etc.
  • Every conversation is about them, never about how you feel or what is going in your life.
  • If every time they are ready to move someplace they need your assistance financially.
  • If they need you to pay the gas bill, the light bill, or get the boot off of their car because they did not pay their tickets.
  • If they allowed their car to get towed because they parked in an area with signs posted, your car will be towed if parked without authorization.
