For men, there are a number of studies that have shown treatment with certain vitamins, particularly the antioxidant vitamins A (beta-carotene), C, and E, as well as certain minerals improve sperm motility (and presumably fertilizing capacity). Things that have a negative effect for men’s fertility are smoking, obesity, the use of hot tubs, steam rooms, or saunas, the use of recreational drugs, overexercising, excess alcohol, and the use of St John’s Wort. Certain prescription drugs can cause reversible impairment of sperm count as well, particularly ciprofloxin, asulfidine, testosterone, and some, but not all, blood pressure medications. Consult your physician about alternative medications if appropriate.
