Survival Guide: Morning Sickness

For the greater percent of us out there, there will be morning sickness.  If you are one of those lucky few, please don’t tell your friends how you never got sick or even felt a little queasy.  For the rest of us, morning sickness is a fact of life for a pregnant woman and for the working woman a challenge close to competing in an endurance event.  When you think you can no longer take it you keep on going.  I found a number of good ways to help with the general sickness as well as coping with it at work.  Remember two things about morning sickness: 1) it is often a good sign that things are progressing well with your pregnancy and your body is adjusting to being pregnant, 2) morning sickness often sets in when you haven’t told anyone.  Imagine having the flu and telling everyone you feel great, but not to get between you and the bathroom without tipping them off. Morning sickness is a natural occurrence for a pregnant woman and a foreign occurrence to the working woman.

Here are few tips on how to deal with the general physical parts of morning, afternoon and evening sickness:

1) Eat small amounts frequently. Try to avoid greasy foods.  They can increase feelings of nausea.  Carbohydrates and fruits can be good sources.  I always enjoyed crackers (Pringles if you feel like Polly after a while), an apple or orange and if you like cheese, string cheese is a good snack as well.

2) Eat something before you get out of bed if you have morning sickness.  My theory was the child feasted all night of your nutrients and you wake up empty.  You can ease the first wave of nausea by recapturing some of those nutrients and settling your tummy with a little food before leaping into the shower.

3) Try natural remedies.  Ginger is a natural remedy for nausea.  You can purchase tablets at any place vitamins are sold or eat ginger if you can or steep it in tea.

My daughter is 5 months pregnant, has been sick EVERY single day and has lost her job due to her morning sickness. We are now celebrating as she is sick ONLY until 11am...and this is after being awake since 4am. My heart goes out to all of you expecting moms. As I hold her hand as she is vomiting...I wish I could help you too. She has been prescribed Zofran, we bought the braclets, she tries to eat small snacks....but has has no relief.

Tracey I know how you feel. At 10 weeks I am finally starting to feel normalish again. I work in a kitchen, so smells are completely the worst thing for me to deal with. Crackers are completely my favorite thing to eat or just plain popcorn is also pretty good. But man oh man I haven't felt this tired sice i had mono in the ninth grade! Its so awful! When you feel like you can't stomach food, V8 has been the best thing in the world to me. I dont really like the veggie juice taste so much so the V8 splash and V8 fusion juices are awesome. they are so full of vitimans and nice and light on the sick tummy, I can't get through a morning without them. Plus when you do get sick I find that the juices just make it easier on you. It burns less...

Hi Tracey, I'm sorry you are so ill. I hope one of the remedies in my story will help you. The wrist bands were my savior in the end. I was sick for 14 weeks with my daughter and 16 weeks with the twins. I would try the bands if you can. I felt like I couldn't move with out them. One last note is that morning sickness is supposed to peak at the 9th week and then begin to subside. I hope that is true for you and it may get a little worse and then a lot better. I was also told many times during my own battle that morning sickness was a good sign for your baby's development. You may message me through the prompt on my profile page if you'd like to discuss further. I hope you are feeling better soon.

im 8 wks pregnant with my second child and can honestly say ive never felt so ill in my life. ive lost my job over time off and spend more time in bed than out of it. ive tried everything to stop myself being sick but nothing works. gp gave me pills but they make me feel faint so only take them when i have to. makes me wonder if the difference in pregnancies has anything to do with the 10 yr gap between then?
