Three, Two, One...Lactivate!

Which leads me to believe that perhaps exposure is, after all, the key. The problem, of course, is that we’ve worked ourselves into something of a Catch-22. More exposure of the nursing breasts will be difficult, because we have set women up to believe that it is inappropriate, and the opportunities for increased exposure are themselves self-limited, due to our haste in weaning our children. However, keeping a cultural blanket over the working breast will do nothing to help garner acceptance for the practice. At least Emily Gillette’s boob has got us talking, and now perhaps other women, like the activist groups publicly feeding at nurse-ins, will keep the discussion of the functional breast a pertinent one. What do you think? If you breastfeed, are you uncomfortable doing so in public? Have you ever been asked to leave or cover up?

Very insightful. Thanks for writing. I like the juxtaposition of "working breast" versus "sexual breast". The baby comes first. Those that can't handle the image are the real crybabies who resent the fact they were bottle fed!

I recently moved to Europe with my young daughter. I was relieved -- and honestly, nervous at first -- to learn that breastfeeding is perfectly normal anywhere. The first time I fed my daughter in a restaurant, I thought I would die of embarrassment...but no one cared. No strange looks. No eyes politely averted. It was a non-issue. And totally liberating!!! Why is the US soooooo antiquated with on this issue?
