Childhood Liver Diseases

By: Nikki Smith (View Profile)

As a parent, who has been through the trauma of my child having liver disease, I really think it is time parents were made fully aware of all the symptoms that occur in children, especially when they are just tiny babies. My young son was born prematurely and weighed just 3 pounds 11 ounces. He was amazing, the most beautiful little boy. Then when he was 3 weeks old, we were told that his liver was failing and he was rushed straight to a specialist hospital for the care he needed. The doctors and nurses fought in vain to do what they could for my little boy. They did test after test but they could not find a diagnosis. Eventually my boy could not take any more pain or suffering and he gently passed away.

Until this happened to us we knew nothing about childhood liver diseases. There are many symptoms including their skin turning yellow (jaundice). Every day at least 2 children under the age of 16 are diagnosed with a liver disease in the UK alone. Parents should be made aware of these illnesses at the earliest possible time. All of us parents need to make a stand to ensure we all know about these illnesses in order to understand them.

Like Laura, I know next to nothing about Liver Disease. Preparation is so key with babies, healthy or otherwise. There needs to be more attention given to these ailments before more victims are diagnosed!

Nikki, I am so sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing your story and bringing this important topic to our attention! I knew very little about liver disease outside of jaundice.
