Parents in Wisconsin may face twenty-five years each in jail after their eleven-year-old daughter died from untreated diabetes. Instead of seeking medical care, the couple prayed over a two-day-period while their daughter died. This sort of thing isn’t new. Some religions forbid medical treatment or blood transfusions. A couple in Oregon were charged with manslaughter after their baby died from an untreated pneumonia. If a religion forbids medical intervention, should followers be charged with manslaughter when a child dies?

It is phenomenal how much religion plays a role in our everyday life. So many people continue to live a life of darkness because of the ignorance that has been embedded within the teachings of religious structure, that we are experiencing this type of disappointment and loss of lives. I do not condemn the parents of ither child for being faithful to their beliefs, especially if their religious order instructs them to denounce secular medical therapies. However, I do blame them for being willfully ignorant to their religious structures without first putting the love of God ahead of all else. God does not desire for any of us to experience the pains we endure in our everyday lives. Albeit we are taught we must endure such pains to grow, I do not believe we should subject our families, friends, or neighbors to live according to our same conditional thinking. The children were helpless and depended solely on their parents to do the right thing. The only thing we can offer now is prayer.
I am all about the rights of a child and personally I disagree with blaming one's actions (such as not seeking medical attention) on religion. At the same time, I see it somewhat hypocritical to charge this couple with manslaughter for what they believe in (yes it was wrong) meanwhile hundreds of thousands of babies are killed in this country by all manner of abortion. What makes that any better? We still have the blood of the innocent on our hands. I don't want to hear any crap about those babies "not being real babies yet" I have done extensive research on the topic so I know better. Many babies are murdered in the second/third trimester then sold for parts. Disgusting, but yet we judge others and are so opinionated when it comes to their actions/decisions. I say look in the mirror and make sure you are without fault before condemning others. Yes, absolutely positively 100% what they did was wrong, but as a country we let reckless acts occur towards infants and fight to legalize it.

Of course they should be charged with manslaughter. Speaking soley from a legal standpoint, refusing medical treatment to your child is not a protected freedom of the first amendment. A person loses religious freedom (as guaranteed by the first amendment) when their practices infringe on the rights of others; in this case the child's right to life, and therefore the right to medical treatment.
You must not have children, Midori, because to a lawyer, or a mother or father, the decision in this case seems nothing but just. You cannot let someone die, even when the murder is cloaked by religion. Religion is not an excuse to let a child die. No one has the freedom to take another's life from them, even indirectly.

This is not going to be a popular answer, but I don't think they should be charged with manslaughter.
