- Look for parent volunteers in the school. What are they doing? Are they smiling? Ask about communication between home and school and what kinds of resources are available for parents to help their child. Look for a school where parents are treated as partners in their child’s success. “The level of parent involvement,” says Weselak. “That is your key indicator.”
In the final analysis, parents have different ideas for what makes a good school. Some parents won’t budge on music classes, while others are willing to find other ways for their children to study music. Some parents value diversity, others sports. School leaders feel pressured to offer everything parents want, but something always gets squeezed out of the curriculum. Make sure your school is offering the aspects of education you hold most dear.
