A good friend plans to move to the suburbs once it’s time for her baby to attend elementary school. She does not want him to go to school with “kids from the projects” but is adamant that he attend public school. I don’t agree—being exposed to a socially diverse school environment won’t influence his solid morals and family values. I wonder what is the greater influence on a children’s development: their home and family or their school and friends?

I think the school with the best teaching methods, best teachers, and largest percentage of kids going on to college all seem like a good guage. That said, whether your family encourages education is more apt to influence you (more so than friends). I also think everyone benefits from racially and culturally diverse environment; it broadens you as a person.

The answer is Both. Determining where to send your child to school is more about the school, it's philosophy, how your child will fit in, etc.--not about it's demographics. My son attended schools in 'the projects' and public and private. I care more about the teacher's qualifications, class-size, and how they teach.
