In some high schools, drills are being carried out—but not for fire safety. When a bell rings students and teachers cut off lights, run into closets and keep quiet while someone roams the halls pretending to be a shooter. Armed instead, with a notepad, the shooter writes down the rooms where he hears giggles or can see students. This is the new age of “shooter drills” designed to keep students safer should a shooting occur. What do you think?

Honestly YES these drills are nessecarry. When I was in MIDDLE school (mine was attached to the "this is your last chance" high school.where they sent the worst of the worst and we were a normal middle school) one of the kids in the highschool section (whom I personally knew) stabbed a teacher (who was also a reverand) multiple times. The reason this "young man" was asked to remove his hoddie in class. When he had refuse numerous times Rev. Brown grabbed the tip of the hoddie and pulled it back removing it from this "young man's" head and was stabbed in upwards of 20 times!(the two schools shared a gym and nurses area) So the Rev. Brown attempted to get to the nurses station...There was blood ALL OVER the halls to the gym, all over the nurses area, and it could NOT be cleaned up for a couple WEEKS as the Rev. died in OUR SCHOOL as it was a MURDER scene. Though he fled the school he very well could have killed students afterward. So it is very important to know what to do.

As a high school teacher for eleven years, we started doing these drills after Columbine. It's a necessity, I'm sad to say. I'd rather be prepared in such a crisis and know what to do to save lives; my students' lives, my coworkers' lives, and my own life. My administrators were well-prepared and had us practice numerous drills--fire, tornado, bomb-threats, shooter, etc. We never had closets big enough for 25-30 teenagers in a class, but they knew which wall to line up against on the floor so the shooter could not see them from the locked door or windows. They knew to turn off the lights and be quiet so as not to draw attention to our classroom. The kids took it seriously and never complained.
It is unfortunate that shootings happen at schools. Why not? The only person with a gun is the disgrunteled former student, usually one with a mental problem. This is exactly why I applied for a carry permit. A permit to carry a weapon. I applied after the shootings at Virginia Tech. While I am not a student and will not likely be on campus for such an event...or any event, I just thought that the odds should be even.
Students should not hide in a closet. This is the worse thing to do. When an enemy is attacking, the hard choice is to go where the shooting is happening. That means everyone! Basically, a weapon has 6 or 10 bullets. If the students hide, the gunman can shoot and reload all he wants. If he is charged, he might get 6 or 10 shots off (probably less since he will be shocked), but that is the only choice. If 7 charge and he has 6 bullets, he it toast. It is over. Some losses, but it is better than losing 33 who think he will be nice if they conply.

understandably this can instill fear into people. however we need to accept the fact that these things are occuring. I am a teacher myself and I tell you, I would love to have some kind of a drill to know what to do if the situation were to ever occur. Understandably the shooter may be a former student so they will know the drills, however, simply having a base to go off of for the teachers and students is better then nothing. we cant go around pretending these things cant happen to us, and saying that drills would be pointless. do peope think fire drills are pointless just because theyre building has yet to burn down? Obviously these things are created for a reason and unfortunately were in a new age were this madness is going on, and as a teacher and a parent i think drills should be instilled into the system

Government institutions are teaching us to be very afraid. The stress is not healthy.
Don't almost all of the shootings happen by former or current students at the school, therefore they would know the procedures when he would walk into the school with guns. all the shooter has to do is open the classroom door and start firing at random or open doors and find them.
basicly is pointless to have drills for something that can be overcome by someone participating in the drills.
