A Day For Photographs

By: Terrence Wayne Sippel (View Profile)

My son’s first day of Kindergarten was in August of 1999. At that point in time, I had already been teaching for twenty years. I had taught everything from 1st grade to AP Calculus. I had initiated some new programs, coached high school sports with some degree of success and had other minor accomplishments. But I never had my name or picture in the newspaper. And that was fine—I had no expectations.

I take my son for his first day of school. The local newspaper has a reporter there and that afternoon my son’s picture is on the front page announcing the opening of schools for the year.

I teach for twenty years and work in absolute anonymity. My son simply “shows up” for his first day of school and gets his picture on the front page of the paper!
