A few Sundays back, upon returning from church, my three-year-old daughter came to me still concerned about a dramatic story she had learned in Sunday School. She told me of a man who was badly beaten and left at the side of the road. She re-enacted several travelers coming along, noticing the injured man, but crossing to the other side continuing on their way.
My youngster was incredulous at that; saying, “Mom, he was really hurt and crying for someone to help him!” “So, what happened, honey?” I asked. She answered dramatically, “Finally someone came along who put the man on his donkey, took him to a hotel and said, ‘Take care of this Hurtie man. When I come back, I will pay you.’” We sat quietly for a moment.
Finally, I asked, “What was the kind man’s name?” She pondered the question for a few seconds; then looked up at me answering happily, “The Good Samerican!” I laughed out loud; saying, “And, so we are, sweetheart.”

Aren't we though! Ever the givers. Ever the first responders. Ever the deep pocket, whether it be the blood of our young or the currency-evidenced sweat of our brow, for whatever ails the world. Your daughter is right on the mark! Good Samericans indeed.
