- If you really, really want to wash your fruit make your own “soap” with cold water, baking soda, and lemon juice.
- If you are juicing your own fruit, rub the fruit on the counter to get the juices going or prick the skin with a fork and microwave for a few seconds.
- Oranges - Navel is good for eating. Valencia for juicing. Blood Oranges have a tart flesh. Mandarin are small and sweet.
- Apples - Braeburn - good all around apple. It’s crisp and goes well in sauces and salads. Golden Delicious is well golden and delicious as my husband would say. Granny Smithof course is a great one for pies as well as caramel apples. It’s tart with some sweetness. A Fuji apple is a super-sweet apple and is good for use in baking and sauces. Galaapples are wonderful for sauces and applesauce. They are sweet and mildly aromatic. And McIntosh in sweet with some tartness. It’s can be used for applesauce or just eating it plain is terrific! - Finally, don’t forget to use fruit for your home. Throw some apples skins that have soaked in water for a little while (left from the pie) and cinnamon on a baking sheet in a low oven—not very long, for a yummy smell (store skins in the fridge until ready to use). Or you can put orange skins with some cloves on the stove in a pot with water. Don’t forget to grind up your used lemon in your garbage disposal for a fresh smell.
My poor summer fruit is feeling left out. I will get to you when you come back and visit me my delicious friends. Yes, I do need help. Thanks for asking!
