Do Plants Deserve Respect?

By: Jacinta O’Halloran (Little_personView Profile)

I once had a boss who talked to her plants. She said her plants thrived on her attention and respect. I tried to talk to mine too, but felt silly. A Swiss federal committee raised eyebrows in both the scientific and religious communities by declaring that plants deserve respect, and that killing them arbitrarily is morally wrong. Have you ever decapitated a flower without reason? Ever played that murderous  “loves me, loves me not” game? Or, do you treat your plants and pets with the same respect?

I whole-heartedly feel that all living things deserve respect. A living thing is a living thing. Plants, bugs, pets -goes w/out saying, all of it. Last summer while weeding my garden i was hit all of a sudden with "why am i killing these weeds?" They did not choose to be a weed or where to grow, it's just their lot in life. Now, i understand that they threaten and choke my vegetables, but i still feel a little bad for pulling them. As for discarding plants just because they are ugly, i don't believe in that either. We have a side of our house kind of out of site where we transplant the less desirable to look at stuff, but i couldn't just throw away a living plant with a good conscious.
Bugs are alive too! And they aren't out to get you. Now, an infestation of something, say cockroaches or termites needs to be nipped in the bud. But the occasional bug on the rug or wall probably doesn't want to be there any more than you want it to, so do it the favor of setting it free.

I don't know if I really feel this personally, but intellectually I agree with the Buddhist tenet that all life should be respected. I still flush bugs down the toilet and toss plants that have almost-but-not-quite bitten the dust.

If you mean caring and providing nourishment for them because they're a vital, living organism in the cycle of Life, then yes, I treat them with the same respect as I do any human being.
