Licking Salt: Overcoming Addiction to the White Stuff

But don’t forget salt itself can be processed. According to the Pacific Health Center, the high-heat processing that gives us our table salt removes eighty-two of the eighty-four good-for-you minerals normally found in sea salt. And with the addition of aluminum compounds, like aluminosilicate of sodium and yellow prussiate of soda to prevent moisture absorption and caking, our table salt becomes just as processed as other foods. Best to try unrefined salt offered by companies like Celtic Sea Salt or Real Salt. Maybe living a low-salt life will help us live to be old salts.

Hey, it’s not just about food. Salt crystals can be used in the bath, too. Check out what the Himalayan Crystal Salt Company offers. Kosher and unrefined—that’s what you’ll find at Hawaiian Specialty Salt.

No farmer surives without a salt block and from what I can find there has not been one double blind study done that says salt is bad for you. However all thing in moderation. I also notice that there is an increase of goiter's being reported. Could this be a result in lower salt without the iodine.

On a culinary note: My wife and I went through a period of enjoying freshly-ground rock salt until you find out the price of good rock salt is astronomical. So we substituted Kosher salt in the grinder for a while until my wife went on a two-month Mrs. Dash’s fling.

When I was a kid, living in Bogotá, Colombia, we would visit the famous salt cathedrals, which were literally churches carved out of salt mines. I remember licking the walls as if in disbelief, but sure enough, they were salty. Almost gross, since the walls were black from the soot of a hundred years’ of soot from burning candles. My mother still has a 3-inch block of salt from the gift shop; I remember licking that too!

Ever since I have cut sugar out of my diet I stopped eating table salt because there is sugar added to it (no wonder it is so addicting!!) I am a huge fan of sea salt but lately I LOVE Real Salt it is pinkish in colour is at is unprocessed and still contains all of the natural minerals found in salt. I don't eat processed food either because of multiple food allergies so the only salt I use is the amount of Real Salt that I put in my food when cooking. I would never go back to table salt as Real Salt has so much more flavour and nutritional value to it, try it you'll like it! :)
