The Basics of Sleep Disorder

By: Kenneth D. Weeks, Jr., M.D., F.A.C.C., F.A.C.P. (View Profile)

There are newer ways for making the diagnosis now, including polysomnograms (sleep studies), where you spend the night in a sleep laboratory and undergo precise technical analysis, for a correct medical diagnosis. There are multiple new ways to manage sleep disorders, from simple sleep aide medications, to continuous positive airway breathing masks, and even oral or otolaryngologic surgery. Of importance, is that many people do not know their sleep pattern or recognize that there are medical difficulties related to sleep disorders, so their bed partners need to help assist them in the diagnosis. Certainly, the most important question you should ask yourself is “Does my sleep restore me for the next day’s activities?” If the answer is no, your sleep needs to be evaluated more thoroughly.
