Alternatives to DEET

By: Karen Megel (View Profile)

I have spent the last 5 years trying to educate people about DEET products and how harmful they are to us, our children, grandchildren, animals, and the environment. The media would like us to believe that we either have to stay inside on wonderful summer days, wear winter clothes to keep mosquitoes and other biting bugs away from us, or spray poison on our loved ones to divert West Nile, Lyme Disease, and other debilitating or even deadly maladies caused by the bite of these little pests. I have formulated products to combat this problem.

They work perfectly, just as these natural products should. I have a spray for humans and small animals, it is called K-2 (K-SQUARED) that has been tested all over the world, a large animal repellent for horses and show stock (tested in the United States, mainly in Colorado, Montana, and North Carolina), an athlete's foot spray, and a residual indoor spray for tents and netting.

I am 47 years old and have been disabled since 1990. I have a degree in Criminal Justice but due to my disabilities, I have been too sick to work for almost 2 years. I believe I was given this gift from God so I could be of service to the community and have a way to support myself. I have used these products on my babies, grandbabies, and animals. They work better than poison, longer, and they don't peel the paint off of cars like DEET does. This has been field tested in 11 different countries with excellent results. I have not received even one negative comment. Does anyone have any ideas on how to let the public know that there is a perfect alternative to relieve the worry of insect bites? I do not have the resources to make commercials on my income. It is not right that moms should be lead to believe that there is not a choice for protection for their children or their dogs, cats or horses. There are testimonies available and so much information at hand. This is a gift given from God and I am to use the proceeds to start a Christian witness program for women in prison.

Any ideas or questions fielded would be not only welcome, but would be looked upon as a blessing. The prices are competitive to DEET products, but the benefits to using K-2 are so much more than poisoning our world. I believe that if I could get someone to look at this, these products could also help combat the Malaria problems in Africa.

This is great to hear! When I left for my two-year stint in Asia, I had picked up some DEET at REI, but never used it because it burned my feet. My body just knew that this stuff wasn't good for me. I ended up buying local stuff in Indonesia, which seemed to work and just always wore long pants and shirts when I traveled in malaria zones. I would recommend contacting REI or Whole Foods or any store/company that prides itself on being better for the body and the environment. Good luck!
