Divine Guidance: Is Empathic Understanding Giving In?

By: Lisa Nastasi, Ph.D. (View Profile)

Suzy always speaks her mind and it often gets her into trouble. As a good friend, I have always defended her when others tried to put her down. Lately though, she has become quite sarcastic around me. I am not good with confrontations so often I don’t challenge her when she oversteps the mark.

Recently she has begun attacking me more directly, especially if our husbands, who are good friends in their own right, are around. Suzy told me via email that she thinks I look down on her, patronize her, and that she believes that she is never good enough for me. She has also let me know that she thinks I am spoiled and unappreciative of the life I have. I feel very angry, sad, and misjudged.

Do I keep this friendship or cut her loose?

Divine Guidance is published monthly. Each column features a real question from a reader, and we invite other readers to respond with their thoughts and insights by posting comments. If you would like to have your advice to this question featured in Divine Guidance, please send a short response to the editor at rbrown@realgirlsmedia.com.
