Get Up and Dance: You Don’t Need A Second Chance

By: Rebecca Weeks (View Profile)

By far the most beautiful human spirit I will ever know

Belonged to my cousin Julia whose tenderness will forever glow.

She was a magnet to mean people, who didn’t know grace,

Anonymously planting flowers and love all over their space.

It seems God called her to care for animals and women who hurt

Because her appeal was so inviting she could have sold dirt.

It was no surprise that Julia’s career and marriage soared to the sky,

But how did she find time to be a deacon, volunteer, and make pies?

Out of the blue, for days she lay sick and her entire body was sore.

The doctor diagnosed cancer and gave her only eight months more.

She swallowed, looked upward, and said, “Lord, I see your plan.

This deadly strife is my vehicle. Now I understand.”

“This is no dress rehearsal. I’m here on stage to dance.

My life is already beautiful. I don’t need a second chance.”

Clothed in joy and contagious with confidence,

She was a witness to the lasting power of faith’s defense.

Never silent, never weeping, never asking, “Why me?”

Instead she served others and vowed to do God’s will gleefully.

She visited the elderly and taught around the city,

There simply was no time for her to dwell in pity.

Her husband was a cradle, singing “Rock-a-bye my Sweet.

I’ll shave my head, show you the world, and wash your feet.”

Cancer blanketed her lungs and attacked her precious heart.

But evil as it was, it could not tear her hope apart.

They made lists of goals including travel, parties, and service,

oil painting, hiking, and never missing a chance for a kiss.

Their strength outweighed her tumor by at least fifty pounds,

And God infused her with courage to last several Chemo rounds.

Her footsteps sank deep and crossed paths of many souls lost.

They asked to follow her but she pointed to Jesus on the cross.

She sang, she joked, and all along she persisted.
