Ways to Get in Touch with What is Important to You:

1. Construct a timeline of your life, making note of the times that you have felt the proudest of yourself, the most alive and the most passionate. Ask yourself what it was that you were experiencing that caused you to feel that way. Chances are you will begin to see a pattern develop.

  • Construct a timeline of your life listing events when you have felt most alive.
  • List any patterns that you see.

2. Go back into your childhood and ask yourself what you liked to spend your time doing. Then ask yourself what kind of feelings you experienced in those moments that caused you to want to spend your time in that way.

3. Take a look at the list of people you most admire, and write a comparison of the qualities you admire that these people possess in relation to your own. Check for patterns—the reason you admire them is because they are reflections of what you value most.

Now that you have started to get an idea of your values, it is important that you begin taking steps to ensure that you experience them more often.

Steps to Living Your Life from the Inside-Out:

1. Choose two or three things that are important to you, and find some very simple ways of getting them met.

For example, if beauty is very important to you, surrounding yourself with beautiful things in your home, going to the museum or going for walks in nature could be some simple ways to experience the value of beauty on a regular basis.

If learning is important to you, reading informative books, watching educational programs on TV, or taking a course at your local community college could be simple ways to experience the value of learning on a regular basis.

If adventure is important to you, finding several new routes to drive to work, exploring a new neighborhood in your city, or reading books filled with suspense and intrigue could be simple ways to experience the value of adventure on a regular basis. You get the picture.
