I Am Blessed

By: Sherrolyn Mincey (View Profile)

I am single, sixty-six years old, a daughter, a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. I am truly blessed in many ways. This morning as I was pulling out of my driveway to go to work, the scene in front of me was open land with a lake glistening in the sunshine. The sun was out and shining on every bush, blade of moist grass, and tree in the area.

As I turned the corner toward the main road I had to hit my brakes quickly as there was a mother mallard duck and some babies on the side of the road, and across the street where they live was a white female duck with some of the mallard babies swimming in the pond with her.

Usually I have to be careful and watch for the rabbits that run between the pastures and the wooded areas.

In our pastures these past few weeks we have had white egrets walking among the horses and eating whatever they could find. There must have been a dozen or so. I love to watch them walk around and get up close to the horses.

We have hawks living in the wooded land next to us. They have beautiful reddish heads and a wing span of six feet. It is beautiful to see them sitting on the fence posts, especially when they spread their wings.

We also have doves, black birds, woodpeckers, robins, sparrows, red birds and many others visit our pastures and our bird feeders. There are squirrels in the trees and a family of fox who live in the wooded lot next to our pasture. We have even seen deer in the pasture and occasionally raccoons.

Our dogs run loose on the property without fences. They visit across the street and often when it is warm they get in the lake and swim. The two black Labradors are always the first to get in the lake.

It is so soothing to watch the horses in the pastures. We have seven horses that my granddaughters ride in the high school rodeos. My daughter and granddaughters plan to teach my great granddaughter to ride in the fall after the chosen horse gives birth to a foal sometime soon. Nothing is more fun to watch than a brand new baby horse.

This life isn’t bad for a girl who was raised in the heart of Atlanta. I have part of my family living on the same property I do, but in two separate houses. We purchased ten acres together. My other grown grandchildren and great granddaughter all live within five miles so I can see them any time I wish. My oldest granddaughter is expecting a baby boy sometime the end of June or first of July. My mother lives with me. She is eighty-nine but has Alzheimers.

As I said, I am truly blessed.
