The Love of Libra

By: Jodi Freedman (View Profile)

When I picked her at the San Francisco animal shelter twelve years ago, the animal handler had to go in the cage with me, as she was classified as having “aggression tendencies.” As soon as I sat down and spoke to her, she came and sat on my lap and put her paws around my neck. That was it; she was the one for me. The handler said that I wouldn’t have to worry about how to be with her, because she would train me. And she was right.

Libra taught me how to be a true friend and companion. Even in death, she continues to be my teacher and show me what it’s like to truly grieve. As I create my life, I hope to treat others as well as I treated her and be loved and seen as Libra saw me.

I was given a gift like no other on my birthday. The gift of a friendship that will live on in my actions, thoughts, heart, and spirit.

I'm so sorry to hear that you lost your "fur baby", as I like to refer to pets. I have cats too and know all about the special bond that develops between people and animals. I hope writing these reflections will help ease the pain of your loss.
