Thank God I’m Not in Control

Because of these experiences, I find it especially beneficial to take the time to pause during the season of Thanksgiving and review the many things that I had hoped for that did not happen. Bringing attention to the countless previous occasions when God’s plan turned out to be better than my plan helps me to let go of control in the present. When I find myself trying to ensure that things will go my way, I’m reminded that it’s actually a very good thing that I am not in control.

If things don’t go the way that I want in my life, I can trust that it’s only because God has something better in store for me. Although sometimes it takes a while for me to be able to see that this is true, it’s always the case. This certainly does not mean that I won’t experience suffering and loss in my life. On the contrary, it has often been suffering that has brought about some of the most good in my life. What it means is that in the big picture, from an eternal perspective, God is in control and I should be glad about that.

If I’m able to foster this type of mentality, my daily life will be significantly impacted. Instead of grasping for control of my life, I’ll recognize that God is in charge and I’ll strive to see what God’s plan is instead of struggling to implement my own plan. Now, when I think about where our next move will be or if and when we might have another child, I can take a sigh of relief that it isn’t up to me. I can enjoy my day to day life with a thankful heart and wait excitedly for whatever new adventure might lie ahead.
