The caller i.d. said “not available.” I answered it and a man’s voice was on the other end. He said, “Lisa, you don’t know me, but I understand that you’re having problems with Christmas this year, and I would like to help you. Can you tell me a little bit about what you’re going through?” His voice was oddly comforting. I told him what had happened, and how I had to give the attorney everything I had. He asked if he could take me grocery shopping to buy me everything we needed for Christmas dinner. “I told him no, that I didn’t take charity from strangers. He told me to swallow my pride, think about it, and he’d call me back in a few days. I decided it would be okay, as long as it was a public place. He called back, “unknown” on the caller i.d. We decided to meet at the local grocery store the following evening. I asked him how I would find him. He told me “don’t worry. I’ll know who you are.”
It had turned very nasty, almost blizzard conditions. The wind could take your breath away. The parking lot was slushy and thick with muck. People were still clamoring into the store, stocking up for the coming storm. I walked in to the store, and there in front of me was the most beautiful man I had ever seen. He had blonde hair, blue eyes, a deep tan, a very sporty tan coat on, and canary yellow tennis shoes. I will never forget those shoes. There wasn’t a speck of dirt on them, and so bright you couldn’t help but look at them. He smiled the most beautiful smile and said “hello, Lisa, are you ready to shop? Let’s grab a cart.” As we were walking I looked up at him and said “don’t I know you?” He smiled, and said “I don’t know, do you?” He just kept pushing the cart and smiling. I was very leery of what to get, not wanting to take advantage of his kindness. I would get generic, and he would put it back, and get the more expensive brands. He would put something in the cart, and I would take it out. I’d tell him it wasn’t necessary. He said, “Okay, we’re going to have fun now.” He started putting things in the cart that I would never buy, or be able to afford.
