Jehovah Cheerleader

By: Ashe Selah (View Profile)

How can we lose when
Jesus is rooting for us?
And how can I give up when
He’s already said His prayer?
Is there anything a Father
Wouldn’t give a Son He loves?
So, I receive it
My Faith won’t fail me now.

I remember the morning I woke up hearing this song. I didn’t even know it was me singing it. Not after the night I’d had. It was the kind of night where you can’t seem to convince God or anyone else to bump the needle. So, in the grip of madness, pain stays on repeat. So, in the grip of madness, pain stays on repeat. Feel me?

The more I sang that chorus, the more intense my desire grew to develop the song. Or, perhaps it was the song desiring to develop me. Reveal to me a persona of Jesus Christ I had not considered before. Sure, I’d grown up on “doctor in the sick room....lawyer in the courtroom...friend to the friendless”. And some of us have memorized the list of Jehovah <insert name here> by heart. But do we ever consider Him, simply—our Cheerleader?

There are many “buts” in the Bible, but the one in Luke 22:32 really knocks my socks off.  Preparing for the ultimate sacrifice for the world, Jesus tells Peter how much Satan desires to have him. Watch this “but” at work.  “...BUT, I have prayed for you, that your faith won’t fail.” Can you imagine the Son of God praying for you?

He did not pray that we’d never make a mistake. He did not pray that we would never fall down and need help getting back up. He did not pray that we’d have instant maturity, barring the need for life lessons and tests (of many, I’ve failed miserably). He only prayed that as we face our ugliest days and nights—that, our Faith in Him would not fade away.

Meeting Jehovah Cheerleader that morning really changed the game for me, if only to push me out of bed to live another moment. I would soon accept the fact that giving up doesn’t have to be the only option, not with Jehovah Cheerleader clenching His hands in prayers and cheers as I...walk, crawl, cry, go through, throw up, grow weary, feel super, feel dumb, fall out, run away, come back, deny Him, worship Him—all on this obstacle course called Life. He earnestly expects His prayers to be answered by a Father who Loves Him...and Loves us too!
