I feel like something is missing here. Was there a critical mistake in his judgement or unlawful activity? Substance abuse? Feels like something must be "owned" before embarking on the next path.

Yes, we do get to be exceptional through life experiences by choice. But only if we vew them as life experiences and not life miseries. We must accept humbleness as part of ourselves. There is always someone better than ourself and always someone lesser than ourself. We can both give and we can educate. Regardless of what has been put forth before us, it is important to share your own knowledge.
