Observations of a Native New Yorker, Part 3

By: Lisa Montanino (View Profile)

Alex then reverts the conversation back to my geographical situation, which leads me to a question that continually plays in my mind. Would I be happy living anywhere else? I immediately quote a line from one my favorite Edward Norton movies: “I think whoever said it, it was really true. That true New Yorkers understand that people living anywhere else must be in some sense kidding.” Despite the fact Alex doesn’t live here anymore, he completely agrees.

He talked about how he is optimistic that he and his wife will move back to New York due to missing it so much. Would this be me if I moved away? What would I do if I met that amazing someone elsewhere and that person has no desire to live in my native stomping ground? The land of a thousand nations I will most likely hunger to get back to. Cleverly, I stop the paranoid-soaked voice that shouts out from time to time in my head and remind myself how silly it is to worry about a situation that actually isn’t a situation.

I admit to Alex, out of all my travels thus far, California stands out as the top contender for a possible move. An added perk is that two of my friends moved to northern California last year and are thoroughly enjoying it … hmm. Another draw is that California reminds me of southern Italy, though not as gorgeous in my opinion. The similarity of the hugging mountains curving the coastlines are breathtaking to me. California basically has all the spoils of New York with better weather. The thought of moving out there has played in my mind for quite some time now. I’m curious to know who will win the tug of war between my East Coast versus West Coast dilemma.

I wonder if I can hire someone to make this decision for me, because it’s been a struggle I haven’t had enough energy to conquer as of yet. Ironically, since working in New York City after a six-year hiatus, I have acquired a newfound love for this enigmatic City that has always been there for me. Alex says, “Maybe that’s why you were smiling. Working in a City that never casts judgment on you no matter what.” He maybe onto to something. It could very well be the reason I have been noticeably improving these days.

It is amazing isn't it, after a decade of not seeing or talking to an old friend, to feel and be like it was just yesterday when paths crossed. I ran into an old buddy from my op team in the Central American campaigns after twenty years, and it was as if we never missed a beat. We aged alot, but the trials and tribulations we went through bonded us together for life
