Two Tickets to Paradise: Exploring the New Mykonos

For true Mykonosian revelry, however, hit SPACE. Without a table reserved, you’ll be sure to wait in line, and once you’re in, prepare yourself for the blistering oomph oomph of extreme house music.

Your “day after” recovery should be spent at a private beach. The most exclusive beaches on the island can only be accessed by taxi (ask your hotel for arrangements). Agios Ionnis boasts some of the best food in Mykonos and all of the beach seating is reserved. Yet even the most discerning of travelers won’t miss Mykonos’ famed Paradise Beach, the younger, tamer brother of the notorious Super Paradise Beach (founded in the early seventies and frequented by nude men). The only way to get there is by bus, and once you arrive, it’s MTV Spring Break meets Girls Gone Wild. Rife with tabletop dancing, DJs, thatched umbrellas, and general insanity, Paradise is also where you’ll find the most inexpensive food and shopping in Mykonos. After a gyro and a peek at the teeniest, tiniest, itty-bitty-est bikinis south of Antibes, you’ll just about chuck your top and dive into the crystal blue bathtub of the Aegean. After all, you’ve bought two tickets to paradise…literally. Dionysus would be proud.

Additional travel tips:

1) Mykonos has approximately thirty taxis on the island. Expect long waits unless you want to take the bus (most everyone does).

2) The fish in Mykonos is unusually expensive (average high season prices can hit up to €70 a kilo). Shop around for restaurants and avoid places that are right on the water. They tend to hike up their prices.

3) For other luxury accommodations in town, check out The Belvedere Hotel.

4) When in Greece, eat as the…uh…Greeks do. Pop into Joe’s Gyros for the best (and fastest) souvlaki and gyros in all of the Greek islands. It’s New York’s Gray’s Papaya, Greek style.

Both The Mykonos Grand and The Belvedere Hotel can be found at www.slh.com (Small Luxury Hotels of the World).
