Tips for Traveling to Cuba

Participating with local Cuban people in projects like the “INTERNOS” is a wonderful way to get to know the people and culture of Cuba.

Though few Cubans speak English, Cuban people are eager to engage in conversation with visitors, Spanish is the local language.

Study the currency exchange rate and know that there is a separate currency for tourist and locals.

The best times to visit Cuba is December through April when the average temperature is 75 to 85 degrees. June through September is generaly10 degrees warmer.

Accommodations can range from first class hotels like the Americana and the San Juan in Santiago, to “Casa Particulars” Cuban family homes that are set up for tourist stays at about $20-$30 US per night.

Cuba is a Tropical Island with many places worth seeing. Be sure to visit Siboney Beach, on the outskirts of Santiago, Casa Carribe, a popular cultural music center and Del Cobre, a catholic cathedral built by the Spanish.

Cubans have a warm sense of hospitality; don’t be surprised if you are invited by a Cuban into their home.

Cuban society supports their Arts and Culture. An arts center in Santiago created a local mural arts project aimed at beautifying Santiago with mural art in the community. They invite artist from everywhere to participate with them.

Cuban music alone is worth the trip. Cuba “is” the home of both Rumba, and Salsa and you will find music being performed by very talented local musicians, who express the rhythmic soul of the land in a wide variety of cultural styles.
