If you’re worried that the old Valentine’s Day card-and-candy combo will elicit the wrong kind of sigh, try one of these romantic retreats!
Be Sweet.
U2 called love “the sweetest thing.” But chocolate is a close second, and Valentine’s Day is an ideal time to combine them. Not content with the obligatory couple of truffles most packages provide? Over fifty hotels nationwide (affordable Hampton, Comfort, and Holiday Inns among them) offer a tasteful Godiva Getaway that features a box of chocolates, a Bittersweet Love Songs CD, plus a guide to area sweet spots. Those who like a little spice with their sugar can also try the decadent Passion Package at Affinia Hotel’s four NYC locations (from $359, depending on hotel). It includes a “Let’s Get Frisky Gift Basket” loaded with interesting edibles like Chocoholics Body Frosting.
Go Retro.
Admit it. Haven’t you always wanted to slip away to the Poconos and slide into one of those heart-shaped or “champagne glass” whirlpools? Well, you’ll get your chance at Caesars Pocono Resorts as part of its Month of Love promotion (from $250 and $425 respectively). Conversely, you can cross the New York border to the one-time “Honeymoon Capital of the World”— Niagara Falls, Ontario. The Sheraton on the Falls there offers its own romantic room-and-amenities package (from $245). While it lacks the funky furnishings, you’ll likely still get lucky. Five billion gallons of water thunder over the falls hourly, and the negative ions it generates are said to act as aphrodisiacs!
Work out the Kinks.
For something really novel, check out the Erotica Package at Midtown Manhattan’s Library Hotel (from $429). This one includes themed lodgings (the Erotic Literature Room and Love Room are obvious faves), plus such goodies as a Kama Sutra Pocket Guide and a Kama Sutra Love Essentials kit that comes complete with lubricating “Love Liquid.” A suitably sensuous Manhattan alternative is the sin-tillating Valentine’s Day Package at Hotel Gansevoort, which supplements the traditional wine-and-roses bundle with playful extras like a game of Twister, a book of erotic activities, and a come-hither “Mile High Kit” (from $505). Anyone for a feather tickler?
