The Oldest: Leap-the-Dips
Leap-the-Dips (what kind of name is that for a roller coaster, anyway?) premiered at Lakemont Park in Pennsylvania in 1902, making it the oldest wooden roller coaster in the world. The coaster shows its old age in speed (it only goes about ten miles per hour), but what it lacks in thrilling agility it makes up for in terrifying creakiness. What’s scarier: screams filling the air or the sound of a roller coaster on its last leg?
One of the Coolest Water Coasters: Poseidon
The Travel Channel chose Poseidon as one of the top ten European roller coasters. It looks pretty tame from the video, but I think what makes it cool is its length (too many water coasters are just one big hill) and that it incorporates cool scenery, like Greek columns and buildings, into the ride. It looks like the perfect ride for when you need a little relief from the hot sun and dizzying turns of faster coasters.
Best All-Around: Superman Ride of Steel
This ride is so good, it has its own Web site. It was also voted the best steel coaster in 2007 by Amusement Today. You can experience the Ride of Steel by heading to Six Flags New England in Massachusetts.
