What’s On Your Bucket List?

By: Jacinta O’Halloran (View Profile)

I’m going to Australia this summer and I’m excitedly planning “side-trips” to New Zealand and Bali while I’m there. Bungee jumping in New Zealand has always been on my “bucket list”—though I didn’t actually know such a thing existed until I started seeing trailers for the movie over the holidays. Now I’m obsessed with creating a list of places I’d like to visit, or experiences I’d like to have, before I “kick the bucket.” What’s on your bucket list?

Some places on my bucket list are: view Aurora Borealis, Machu Picchu, the Egyptian pyramids, several sites in India, Tibet, Rome, Jerusalem, Antelope Canyon. In all of those places and even here, I'd like to listen to stories from elders.

Go back to Vietnam and visit the places where I served and meet some of the Vietnamese that I worked with. No interest at all in the canned tours of Hanoi and Saigon. See the remains of the Buddhist school I helped build and the communists destroyed. Find the child that I took to cleft palate surgery.

By the way before I die I want to sing in a chorus; produce a documentary; drive a race car in a real race for amateurs; have enough money to take a few hundred people on a dream shopping spree. Every day I think about these things.

I just saw the movie this past weekend. I love both Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. We take so much for granted and do not realize that if we look closer to the people around us we could find joy for a lifetime. We all have dreams deferred as Langston Hughes once said. But they are just deferred for as long as we want them to be. We do not have to wait until we are told that we only have a given amount of time to live. My father used to say that we start dying the minute we are born. It is our job to make that "bucket list" as we start to realize that that life it is too short. I listened to a favorite oldies radio announcer that says that "everyday is like a wrapped gift". We do not know what ifts we will get; sometimes they are wrapped to surprise us. Sometimes, we forget that a simple view of the full moon on a clear night is a gift. How wonderful to have sight and to relish every minute that God's gifts have to offer. Carpe Diem!

I have bungee jumped in New Zealand! I even have pictures and a video that proves it! Still one of the most amazing days of my life. Now, on my new bucket list, is to be on The American Gladiators. I am trying out this weekend!
Wow - lots of travel ideas in the bucket! Writing a book is on my list, as are visiting Papua New Guinea and re-visiting Madagascar. Plus shifting a paradigm or two, winning a Nobel Peace Prize, learning to clone orchids, and maybe something to do with nanotechnology.

It's silly that I always have wanted to go to France and I lived in Italy for four years and never made it! But I hope to get back to Europe and see France and eat some fresh from a cow cheese.

Before I die, I'd like to find a man in this world who doesn't cheat!
