Wish I Was Here: Peggy’s Cove

By: Jacinta O’Halloran (View Profile)

I was feeling good about my little jaunt to the bagel store and back this morning … until I got this picture from my friend Susan. She just got back from Peggy’s Cove, a cute little fishing village not far from her home in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and she thought I’d enjoy this little window into her morning.

I’m enjoying this window so much that I wish I could climb through it into her morning.

My legs ache to ramble and reach over that rugged landscape and oh, my soul aches to soak in the cold quiet and look out over the Atlantic Ocean. Can’t you almost feel the wind whipping around, putting hair on your chest?

I want a picture of me propping up that beautiful lighthouse and to have a hot toddy with salty fishermen in a nearby pub, where I could learn all about the local legend of Peggy—the young survivor of a schooner that ran aground here in 1800.

Wish You Were Here Too?

Peggy’s Cove and its very photogenic lighthouse may be reached on Highway 333 from Halifax, or Highway 103 from Halifax to Exit 5 and then Highway 333.

I’d need to catch a plane to get myself in the vicinity of Highway 333, but just saw that it’s not as farfetched a quick getaway as I’d imagined: Continental Airlines has seats available on direct flights next week to Halifax for $400 round trip. I could be in Halifax in less than two hours from New York.

Maybe instead of wishing, I should be booking …

If You Go.

The lighthouse contains a small Canada Post office in the lower level. During the summer months, it serves as the village post office from where visitors can send postcards and letters. Each piece of mail receives a special cancellation mark in the shape of the lighthouse. I’d go just to send myself a postcard!
