What a Difference a Few Years Makes ...

By: NormaJo Thompson (View Profile)

It had been a few years since I had returned home for a visit. Year after year something always came up and I was not able to go. Even though I have been living her in the United States, home for me will always be Jamaica. I was born there, went to school there, and lived there for many years.

I was very lucky when I became a travel agent, and doing outside sales, the owner/manager allowed me to travel whenever I wanted, and I was able to still receive my commission from my customers when I returned to work. As a travel agent the world was my playground for my traveling customers and myself. Then I went to work for a small airline besides finding it very confining, my co-workers and I could never get our pennies together to us our free flight benefits because even though we did not pay for our flight we needed money once we arrived at our destination.

As a retired travel agent I am able to take advantage of wisdom and knowledge from past experiences. I realize too, that being a Frequent Flyer on one airline does provide one with free trips. So I found a way to travel to free internationally every other year.

I had been really yearning to return home, so I arranged a flexible itinerary of the all the places and people I want to visit. Making sure not to stay with anyone too long. I stayed in Jamaica for only 8 days and visited five relatives all in different parts of Jamaica: Montego Bay, Kingston, Ocho Rios and St. Mary.

The vacation was wonderful, and the connections made it impossible for me to fly direct. I had two stay overs and I was able to visit with my Gran Daughter, her Mom and her other Granny. Delta also upgraded me to first Class travel on part of the trip.

  • What I noticed about how Jamaica had changed in a few years was:
  • How populated it had become, back in the 50’s and 60’s I would always be able to meet someone at the airport that I knew. It was as if everyone knew everyone....NO LONGER SO!
