What a Difference a Few Years Makes ...

  • The hotels seemed to have more than tripled, allowing Jamaica to become really thriving in the tourist areas.
  • Living in California, I was surprised to find so many Spanish speaking people working over there. I thought I had left them in California were they are plentiful. I find them extremely friendly, more so than the Cubans in Miami.
  • The price of some things I buy in the 99 cents Store are so so very expensive in Jamaica.
  • Crime, unfortunately, is definitely what keeps Jamaicans from returning. Its much too abundant there.
  • I see quite a few very large houses being built there. So I asked a lady I was sharing a taxi with how come there are so many houses going up and everything is so expensive? She replied that many people who go abroad better themselves, and save money and build, hoping that their family will eventually live there. Unfortunately, in many cases that does not happen. Sad, but its the crime I’m sure and the cost of living.
  • Kingston has bigger, better huge more beautiful modern buildings. Security in some banks is like going being in a James Bond film. Cards are issued for the floor you need to go to. A security guard is at the elevator to watch that your card scans you though automatic doors on that particular floor. If you need to go to another floor you have to be accompanied by someone. THE OFFICES ARE FREEZING, especially compared to outside.

Ocho Rios, one my favorite town in Jamaica is still lovely, but it has grown so much!

I think my island of Jamaica would be the ideal place for me and my family to spend part of winter there every year.

If a certain painful illness came upon my in my old age, I’d rather buy my cigarettes over there, than have chemotherapy make the quality of my life unbearable; while killing off part of my body, so it just becomes malignant somewhere else ... Even though I have never smoked before in my life, I would learn!
