I have made it to Friday! I’m dizzy with fashion. I am spinning from the whirlwind of style, color, and shapes that stormed up and down the runway so that fashion retailers, journalists, bloggers, and magazine editors can all project, advertise, and critique what’s next in fashion.
We have been watching fashion shows since 1943. It all started in the showrooms and ballrooms of Paris—of course—and it wasn’t until the late 1970s and 1980s that designers began to show their collections across NYC. They showed in lofts, photography shoot spaces, and even restaurants and clubs so the fashion world had to totter in incredibly high heels from one far flung space to another. In 1993, a centralized venue space was created—thank goodness!—by the indomitable Fern Mallis, who is now the senior vice president of IMG fashion, the company that produces Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Hence we all sit in tents in Bryant park (for the most part) … comfortable now in our incredibly high heels!
My muddled head wants to share a taste of the trends that floated to the top this week for us girls who wear size 12 and up. There’s so much to choose from and so much that will work with every body shape. The styles of Fashion Week may not immediately seem right for the curvy body—perhaps because they are still being paraded on rail thin bodies, but they encourage us to play, to interpret, and to translate what we see for our own individual shapes. I’m inspired! We curvy girls are going to be filling our fall wardrobes with pencil skirts, jewel tones, saturated pastels, longer tunics over narrow skirts, pants shapes that still go from peg leg to wide leg, strapless dresses, florals that we will mix with leopard prints and paisleys, and shirts that tie in bows or tie as sweaters in the back for our grand exits!
Oh and there’s lots of black! Black is still a classic and practical neutral (and we all know why!). Ladies, after soaking in so many shows this week, I’m telling you we all need hats, hats, and more hats! Fedoras and berets … lady-like hats with personalized individuality.
